As Stated by Anne Lamott, “If something inside of you is
real, we will probably find it interesting, and it will probably be universal.
So, you must risk placing real emotion at the center of your work. Write
straight into the emotional center of things. Write toward vulnerability. Risk
being unliked. Tell the truth as you understand it. If you’re a writer, you
have a moral obligation to do this. And it is a revolutionary act—truth is
always subversive”. In 1975 an African American feminist named
Ntozake Shange from New Jersey created a chorepoem called "For colored girls who have considered suicide/When the rainbow is enuf " . The piece consists of a group of 20 poems about how
to help African American women survive in society with pain due to racism and
sexual anger. Centuries Later in 2010, Tyler Perry's remade
a Drama called "Forcolored girls " which won Several NAACP Awards. The
film was based on a group of all African American women in New York who lived
in the same Harlem apartment building. The women go through several trials and
tribulations which make the film relatable to all women in one way or another.
There are several emotional scenes which make people realize how hard women
have to work to make it in life. Within the storyline of this film each
woman deals with a different conflict such as rape, infidelity, love and
abandonment. I am going to focus on if the writer has the right to Remake the
film and write it in his own perspective considering that he is a male and
African American.
African
American Women always receive the same background stories from authors. The
woman is shown as over aggressive and either on drugs, hypersexual, or very
uneducated. Women are shown in shows as hypersexual in shows consistently(Yuri). Women
are shown in shows as hypersexual in shows that they have jobs that require a
high education background such as Shonda Rimes television show Scandal, and Mara Brock Akil show Being Mary jane. The uneducated and aggressive African
American women are shown in family movies such as Moonlight, and the television show Empire. This shows viewers
and other African American people that media categorizes African American women
into two groups Highly educated and promiscuous, or aggressive and uneducated.
This stereotype does not set a positive image for African American women in
society. This stereotype does not set a positive image for African American
women in society.

Taya,
ReplyDeleteI have not seen this film but that will soon change. This film is very interesting and it is one of hardship and pain. Although I am do not agree with your opinion on abortion rights in the United States you do bring up some interesting points. Often times, women choose to undergo an abortion out of health complications that could occur to them or the baby, the financial responsibility, or pregnancies that resulted in rape or incest. Slightly more than half of women who received abortions were in their twenties and had at least one child. For some women, abortion and adoption are not uniform so the idea of adoption is not an option. I think the best way to tackle the abortion rates is to provide proper contraceptives available for a variety of men and women.

Like you stated earlier the topic of abortion is a huge debate worldwide. What I found the most interesting is that Tyler Perry decided to focus this idea of abortions and minorities. Statistically speaking minorities are more likely to get an abortion than not and I believe this is due to all the trials and tribulations that their lives bring. For example, some people may feel like they have to resort to prostitution because they need to live off of something and then get pregnant—if they can hardly take care of themselves a child would be a large burden.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen this show but it seems to be very interesting. I too appreciate the focus on abortion in minority communities. I would like to add that this idea extends beyond just minorities. As far as unnecessary abortions, it has a lot to do with self esteem issues. Both women and men fall into the lack of contraceptives usage because her or she may feel that the relationship will continue if declines intercourse without it. Therefore the real issue is conception. When a couple a couple fails at contraceptives, this leads to unplanned pregnancy. This results in the anxiety of the both the care of the child and, in young people, the idea of not being able to enjoy his or her youth. This leads to unnecessary abortions which gives a general bad name for the term even if the reason is justifiable. Abortion should be at the discretion on both parties involved not everyone else's!

I agree with Kathleen. Perry seems to like to concentrate on the minorities and their hardships. In this particular instance, I don't think Perry is trying to highlight the fact that abortions are bad but simply trying to highlight the entire experience in general. Minorities are statistically more likely to get pregnant in their youth and they are also more likely to make misguided choices due to pressure by those around them or the life situation they're currently in not allowing for something so life changing. He also highlights the lengths the mothers will go to putting their own health in danger and the lack of support they have the entire way through. Although the subject of abortion is touchy I believe that if someone isn't in a position to take care of a child that it wouldn't be wise to bring the child into a life of pain. Especially since those patterns tend to repeat themselves in the lives of the children. Adoption is choice as well.
